Why should I pay for outside supervision?

Something I hear from a lot of new social workers, and something that I thought myself when I started out is, why should I pay for outside supervision if my agency offers clinical supervision?

It’s a good question, social workers don’t get paid enough as is, so why should a new social worker spend their precious resources to get outside supervision? When I finally got outside supervision as a new social worker, I think it was one of the best decisions I made.

The people I worked with provided important information and perspective to me, they were not caught up in my agency drama, and they were willing to point out some of the systemic issues I was facing, which helped me understand my role and my abilities better.

Here are some reasons why social workers should consider seeking outside clinical supervision:

  • To get a different perspective. When you are supervised by someone who is not familiar with your agency’s specific policies and procedures, you can get a fresh perspective on your work. This can be helpful in identifying areas where you can improve your practice.
  • To explore your own values and beliefs. Supervision can be a space to explore your own values and beliefs about social work. This can help you to clarify your goals and make sure that your practice is aligned with your values.
  • To develop your skills. Supervision can help you to develop your skills in areas such as assessment, intervention, and termination. This can help you to become a more effective social worker.
  • To address personal issues that may be impacting your work. If you are struggling with personal issues, such as stress, anxiety, or depression, these issues can impact your work. Supervision can provide a safe space to discuss these issues and develop strategies for coping.

Here are some additional tips for finding and getting the most out of outside clinical supervision:

  • Be clear about your needs. What do you hope to get out of supervision? Once you know what you’re looking for, you can start to narrow down your search.
  • Be open and honest. Supervision is a confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The more open you are with your supervisor, the more helpful they can be.
  • Be willing to work. Supervision is a two-way street. You need to be willing to do the work between sessions. This includes reflecting on your practice, completing assignments, and setting goals.

If you’re willing to put in the work, outside clinical supervision can be a valuable asset to your social work practice. If you think we would be a good fit, please don’t hesitate to reach out, I look forward to hearing from you!
